Post 186 History
Post 186 was chartered in 1937 as Huguenot Post 186 by WWI veterans and met in several halls and churches in the Midlothian area. With the end of WW II, Post 186 had an influx of WWII veterans. In 1947 the decision was made to build a home for Post 186. Post 186 was then re-chartered to Midlothian Post 186 and the present property was acquired. The home for Post 186 was built and has been increased four times to its present size. In 2013 the post was renamed in honor of Maj. Charles A. Ransom.
Maj. Charles A. Ransom died on April 27, 2011 at Kabul International Airport, Afghanistan. Maj. Ransom was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute where he majored in computer science. He served in the Air Force with the 83rd Network Operations Squadron out of Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. Maj. Ransom was posthumously awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Post 186 memberships remained around 50 members until the early 1970’s then showing small increases in membership through early 1990. In 1991, the membership was at 118. Post 186 experienced an upswing in membership to our present level of over 300 members. Post 186 has received 19 consecutive all time high awards (1991-2010) from both the Department and National. The membership at Post 186 includes females and male members, husband and wife memberships, brother memberships, and father and son memberships. Today we have several members that are 50 years or better in membership. |
