THE AMERICAN LEGION MIDLOTHIAN POST 186 -YEAR REPORT 2007-2008
The year 2007-2008 was very productive with the post achieving the 100% membership goal with 388 members on December 31, 2007 and exceeded that number with 440 members 14, which are on active duty, or 106% of goal for the year. This is our 17th consecutive year to exceed the goal and we will earn other membership awards from Department. We had a 100% renewal rate. We lost 13 members to Post Everlasting. We met our financial goals and maintained our operating budget. The Post had excellent relations within the local community and supported programs financially or by participation. We also maintained open communications with both the District and Department. Our income was from Brunswick Stews, Fall Bar-b-queue, Baseball Boosters, Boy State Sponsors, hall rental, donations, poppies, meals and dues. The financial support to the community included Legion Baseball our 44th year. We sent 52 boys to Boys State, 4 boys to the Jr. Law Cadet program, sponsored Manchester JROTC, Manchester JROTC Jr. Shooting and other local community organizations or charities. We aided several needy veterans through our Post VA&R; Committee, and passed out 5000 poppies in support of Memorial Day. The Post Community volunteer hours exceeded 10,000 in our efforts to help and giving back to the community. Participation in the community included, Veterans Day and Memorial Day observances at the Virginia War Memorial, Amelia, Chesterfield Veterans Memorial, Powhatan War Memorial, and our Post program of flags on the graves of our deceased comrades, now at 114 members. Children and Youth programs included participation in the Legion Oratorical Contest, 2 medals to members of the Manchester JROTC and 6 High School Medals. We have several members who volunteer at the VA Medical Center and several who volunteer with the Boy Scouts and others who work with the youth in athletic leagues. Many Post members belong to other fraternal organizations and are recognized as members of the American Legion. At the Post level, we had 8 Post breakfasts. We also had post dinner meetings, 9 Post meetings, 2 guest speakers, the awards dinner, and Christmas party. Our Post newsletter increased in size and had another successful year. We now use e-mail to send the newsletter where we can to reduce our costs. At the District and Department level, the Post members attended both the spring and fall conferences, District and Department Conventions, The National Convention, Legion College, attended Day on The Hill, participated in the 11th District War Memorial Services, the Oratorical and JROTC Contests at Region and Department levels and served on both District and Department Committees. The Post had two Department Officers for the year 2007-08. Bill Cournow was the 11th District Commander unfortunately, he died while in office. Chuck Gudis served as a Department Vice Commander, This shows our involvement with the District and Department. Also the Department will recognize the Post with awards for 17 Consecutive Years All Time High. We feel that our excellent year was the product of an energetic administration as well as a proactive membership. |
