Gordon L. "Gordy" Smith, 88, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 16, 2016. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Betty K. Smith; sons, Donald Smith and his wife, Tracy and Gregory Smith and his wife Jill; grandchildren, Samuel and Ryan Smith; sisters, Joan Dudick and Norma Miller. He was preceded in death by his parents, Isabelle and Robert Smith. Gordy was a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a member of the Constabulary Forces in the Army of Occupation. He was a Post Commander of the Al Bartraw, Jr. DAV Chapter 50 of Chesterfield, VA. He was also a Commander of the American Legion Post 186 of Midlothian, VA. Gordy was a life member of VFW 1426 and spent over 6000 hours volunteering at McGuire Veterans Hospital. He was elected to and enshrined in the American Legion Boys State Hall of Fame and 2014. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 21, 2016 at Morrissett Funeral & Cremation Service, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rte. 10). His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 7500 Hull Street Rd., Richmond, VA 23235. He will be laid to rest on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Manchester Rescue Squad P.O. Box 198, N.Chesterfield, VA, 23832.
